It was a lovely early autumn weather when the “Indonesian Day” was held in the Bird Park Walsrode, in the German state of Lower Saxony on 27 September 2009. The event was featuring Angklung music and the Javanese Rampak Kendang from the Group “Angklung Orchestra Hamburg”. The Peacock Dance, the Jatayu dance as well as the Indang dance performed by students from Hamburg of the artist group Margi Budoyo and furthermore folk songs presented by the Batak Society from Hamburg named MNI ( Masyarakat Nauli Indonesia) were able to gain a big applause from the audience.  This activity was collaboration between the Consulate General Hamburg with Bird Park Walsrode and the Indonesian-German society (DIG) Hamburg.

The event began with a performance of Angklung music, the four songs performed were: Edelweiss, Burung Kakatua, Kopi Dangdut and Manuk Dadali. Next were the Peacock Dance, the Jatayu Dance and Rampak Kendang. The cultural and artistic performances of the first part of the event were enjoyed by around about 400 spectators, including the Director and management of the bird park, the Consul General of Indonesia Hamburg as well as invited guests and visitors to the bird park.

After a lunch break, the show continued with dance performances like the Indang dancer from the Minangkabau region of Western Sumatra. Last but not least the audience was invited to get to know the Batak region. The MNI group all dressed in traditional costumes made from brocade performed their rhythmic music on traditional instruments like the Hacapi (small two-stringed guitar), the Gondang and the Sulim (flute) and Hesek (two small iron) full of joy. The audience was very enthusiastic and came up to the stage to dance together.

In his speech, the Consul General of Indonesia in Hamburg, Teuku Darmawan thanked the management of the bird park for holding the “Indonesian Day.” The relationship of cooperation between Indonesia and Vogelpark Walsrode has been established since a long time and proven to be successful in construction of the Nusantara Rainforest hall in 2000 and the various aid projects for the protection of birds in Indonesia. The Consul General invited the audience to get to know the Indonesian culture better through visiting Indonesia.

The bird park in Walsrode has a unique collection of birds from around the world consisting of 4.500 birds from over 700 species. For the huge collections from Indonesia the bird park has built the "Nusantara Rain Forest" hall, covering an area of 2.800 m2 in cooperation with the Government of Indonesia in the year 2000. It accommodates a collection of birds, plants and ornaments of art and culture from Indonesia.
